Having been finished for mere days, “Debris” has already been named the 2009 Winner of Test Press SF. Test Press gives local producers an opportunity to have their music critiqued by respected industry leaders, and for fans to discover new music and vote on their favorites.
Out of hundreds of submissions, “Debris” earned the year’s highest marks from both the three-person industry judging panel, and also the attending audience, who greeted the song with extended applause.
As a result, “Debris” will be released on the Test Press '09 compilation put out by Epiphyte Records in San Francisco, as well as on ELLUL’s highly anticipated follow-up album in the spring of 2010.
The song itself began as a late night plunge into a fortunate mistake and since then has transformed into a carefully crafted sonic collage of glitch, soul, and avant-garde pop music. Soaring, detuned vocals evoke memories of the 70’s best soul bands, with a modern glitch flair that unites the best of electronic music heavyweights Trentemøller and the Chemical Brothers. “Debris” is only a peek into what is to come for this San Francisco electronic duo.
lyrics
I've been sleeping under my belly,
Under the table,
For no one to see.
Under the covers,
Through a mirror blade
It cut open the debris.
